In short: treat the launch as three short stories, not one big filter. Pick a format for each phase, and get the product asset in week one.

AR earns its place in three phases

A launch is not one moment. Audiences meet a product before it exists, on the day it arrives, and long after. Each stage asks something different of AR.

PhaseJobFormat to consider
Before launchBuild curiosity without revealing everythingSnapchat Lens or TikTok effect for the existing audience, a WebAR link on invitations or teasers
Launch dayLet people see and try the productWebAR on a link or QR code, a Lens, or both together
After launchKeep the product findable and understoodThe same WebAR link on packs, retail and the site

Launch day works best when there is nothing to install

On launch day the audience is a crowd, so friction matters. Our HP product launch WebAR was an in-person event activation where attendees scanned a code and launched a WebAR experience from their phone browser to explore HP's new product, with no app install. The 007 First Light WebAR, made for IO Interactive, used the same logic of a link as the doorway. The QR side of this is covered in AR QR code campaigns for brands, and the WebAR side in WebAR for brands.

The product is the hardest asset to get

The 3D model of an unreleased product is usually the item on the critical path. It sits with the brand's design or engineering team, it often falls under NDA, and it must match the real product in shape, scale and colour. Ask for it in week one, name who approves it, and agree what can be shown before the embargo lifts. A launch brief that fixes the date but leaves the product asset open is the one that slips.

Tell a story with the product, not a spec sheet

A product on a table is information. A product that appears in a place, a world or a moment is a story. For House of the Dragon, our lens was anchored at Sankagiri Hill Fort, so the series arrived in a real place people could stand in, covered in HBO Snap Map AR: behind the build. The same thinking applies to a product: what is the scene where this product matters, and can the AR put the person there? AR for film and entertainment marketing shows how that works when the launch is a title rather than a product.

People do not share a product demo. They share a moment they were part of, with the product in it.

What to put in a launch brief

  • The date and the embargo. What is fixed, and what cannot be shown before it.
  • The audience and where they are. Snapchat, TikTok, a venue, a pack, a link in an email.
  • The product asset and its owner. Model format, approval and delivery date.
  • What success means. Scans, plays, shares or sales, so the measurement is set up before launch. See measuring AR campaign ROI.
  • What happens after. Who owns the link, and for how long it stays live.

Planning detail sits in how to plan an immersive campaign and how to brief an immersive experience. Budget-wise, a custom Snapchat Lens typically starts from $5k and WebAR from $8k, with the full breakdown in how much an AR filter costs.

Frequently asked questions

How is AR used in a product launch?

AR is used in three phases: a teaser before release, an experience that lets people see or try the product on launch day, and a reusable link that keeps working afterwards. Each phase usually needs a different format, such as a Snapchat Lens, a TikTok effect or WebAR.

Is WebAR or a Snapchat Lens better for a product launch?

WebAR suits launch events and links on packs, because it opens in the phone browser with no install. A Snapchat Lens suits reaching an existing social audience with a shareable effect. Many launches use both, with WebAR for the product itself.

What do I need to give a studio for a product launch AR brief?

Give the launch date and embargo, the audience and platforms, the 3D product asset and who approves it, what success means, and what happens after launch. The product model is usually the item that decides whether the timeline holds.

How much does a product launch AR experience cost?

A custom Snapchat Lens typically starts from about $5,000 and a WebAR experience from about $8,000. The final price depends on the product's 3D complexity, the mechanic, the number of formats and how the experience is distributed.

Can an AR product launch work with an unreleased product?

Yes, with agreed controls. The 3D model is usually shared under NDA, and the brief sets what can be shown before the embargo lifts. The teaser phase can use hints and silhouettes while the full product is revealed on launch day.
