How web AR is different from a Snapchat or TikTok filter
This is the part people mix up most. Snapchat filters and TikTok effects are also opened without a download, so they can feel like the same thing as web AR. They are not. Filters like this are what the industry calls social AR, and they only run inside the Snapchat or TikTok app itself. You need that app installed and, usually, an account on that platform.
Web AR does not run inside any other app. It runs in your phone's own browser, Safari or Chrome, the same place you read any other website. No social platform is involved at any point.

What web AR can actually do
- Place a 3D object in front of the camera, on a table, floor, or wall, and let you walk around it
- Track a face and add digital elements to it, similar to a filter, but from a plain link
- Recognise a specific image, like a poster or a product label, and trigger AR content when the camera sees it
- Play video or animation layered into the real environment through the phone screen
- Let a user tap, drag, or resize digital objects placed in their space
What web AR can't do yet
Web AR is not free of limits. It generally runs a little heavier on the phone's battery and processor than a native app, because the browser is doing extra work to render the camera feed and 3D content together. Very complex, high-detail 3D scenes can run less smoothly than the same scene in a dedicated app.
It also cannot put content directly in your field of view the way smart glasses can. You are still holding a phone up and looking at a screen. And on some older phones or unusual in-app browsers, camera permissions for web AR can be blocked or behave inconsistently, which is why the safest advice is always to open the link in Safari or Chrome rather than inside another app's built-in browser.

Web AR and wearable AR on smart glasses get grouped together sometimes because both are pitched as alternatives to installing an app. They are solving the same problem in completely different ways.
Web AR keeps the phone. You still hold it up, still look at a screen, still point a camera at the world. What it removes is the download step.
