What WebAR can and can't do

A browser gets less of the phone than an installed app does. Here is the real line. Tap any of the first three to open that exact demo on your phone, nothing installs.

Where a native app still wins

  • Very heavy 3D scenes. A browser has a tighter budget, so big detailed worlds need cutting down.
  • Long sessions. A browser page is built for minutes of use, not an hour of gameplay.
  • Some deeper sensor and hardware access is only offered to installed apps.
  • Content that must keep working with no signal, since a page has to load first.

Do I need to download an app to use WebAR?

No. That is the whole point of WebAR. You tap a link or scan a QR code, your phone browser asks permission to use the camera, and the AR runs on the page. There is nothing to install and nothing to delete afterwards.

How does WebAR start from a QR code?

A QR code is just a picture of a web address. Your phone camera reads it and opens that address in the browser. The AR page loads there, so a poster, a menu, or a product label can start an AR experience with one scan.

What can WebAR do?

Face effects and try-on, tracking a printed image or QR code, placing 3D objects on a real floor or table, and playing video or audio in the camera view. It works on most modern iPhones and Android phones with no install.

Is WebAR worse than a native app?

It is more limited for very heavy 3D scenes, long game-style sessions, and some advanced sensor access, because a browser gets less of the phone than an installed app does. For a campaign people use once or twice, the zero-install start usually wins.

Which phones support WebAR?

Almost any phone from the last few years with an up to date browser, on both iPhone and Android. Users should open the link in Safari or Chrome rather than inside a social app browser, which sometimes blocks camera access.
