In video, the timeline is time itself, seconds ticking forward, the director deciding what fills each one. In spatial media, the real timeline is attention: what the viewer is looking at, and for how long, replaces the fixed sequence a film relies on. Designing for XR means designing for that shifted timeline directly, not fighting it.
That means every key beat needs a way to pull attention toward it rather than assuming attention is already there: a sound cue from a specific direction, a light change, movement at the edge of the field of view. Spatial audio does more narrative work in XR than it ever needed to in film, because it is often the only reliable way to redirect a viewer's gaze without breaking the fourth wall.
Anchoring narrative beats to physical space
The strongest fix for the attention problem is tying story beats to a physical location rather than a point in time. A reveal happens when the viewer walks to a specific spot in the room, not at the twelve-second mark.
