Every smart glasses demo I've watched this year opens the same way. A notification stack floating in your peripheral vision. A live caption feed running under whoever's talking. A restaurant menu rendered mid-air the second you glance at a door. The pitch is always "look how much this can show you." Every movie reference, every showcase, every hype reel leans into the same instinct, and it's the wrong one.

Phones already fight for your attention. Every app on a phone is built to pull your eyes back one more time. Smart glasses can make that so much worse, because they can hand you information at moments you never asked for it, sitting right there with nowhere to look away to. My glasses exist to solve my problem. They don't exist to bombard me with everything else's.

Done right, this is the first real step past the phone. A notification on your ear instead of a screen pulling your eyes down, and you just get on with your day. Turn notifications off entirely while you're working if you want, but the option sits there quietly, giving you what you need without making you go looking for it. Ambient and silent versus loud and constant, not AR versus no AR. "Look how much this can show you" makes for a better demo than "you'll barely notice it's there." That's exactly why so much of what's out there is failing the real test on purpose.

The dividing line isn't what the device can show you. It's whether it waits until you need it.

Privacy has to work the same way: default, not opt-in. Plenty of physical stores already sit half-rented in the real world, and it isn't hard to picture AR brands renting out digital space the same way. Walk past an Apple Store and Samsung buys the digital ad layer over it. That's a real possible future, and not one I want. Whether it goes that way comes down entirely to the company building the operating system, how much they choose to show by default, and whether the always-on nature of the device pushes people to just switch it off out of self-defense.

There's a genuinely good version of always-on capture. You see someone's outfit, say "what is that, get it for me," and it just works. The difference is intent versus default. Image sensing should stay on the device, never leave the glasses (or the phone, if the glasses can't process it themselves) unless you actually meant to capture something. Google Maps and Apple Maps already blur faces and license plates by default. Glasses should apply the same logic: capture what you meant to capture, not everything sitting in frame. At a concert, that might mean the device only ever captures your own point of view and the people around you in silhouette, not individual faces, unless someone's actually given consent.

Where that line sits gets genuinely tricky once you're capturing family or people close to you, and I don't have a clean answer for it. "Ask consent from people you know, blur strangers" sounds simple until you notice the only way a device could tell the difference is by running face tracking on everyone in view, all the time, known or not, just to work out who counts as consented. Local processing solves the data-leaving-the-device problem. It doesn't solve the being-tracked-without-asking problem. I don't know how this resolves yet.

The business model is the real tell. The open-source glasses I respect most sell you a piece of hardware once and make their money there. That means the incentive is to make your life easier, because that's what gets built on top of and adopted, not what maximizes time in the device. Ad-funded or attention-funded products don't share that incentive, and it shows up directly in how loud the product ends up being. Smart glasses are supposed to make life better, not harder. They should serve you silently, give you information when you actually need it, and disappear the rest of the time.

One more thing, smaller but real: prescription lens swapping needs an actual low-cost path built in. Right now a lot of these glasses charge you close to a second device's worth of money if you need prescription lenses. Meta's current pricing with prescription sits close to the cost of an iPhone on top of the glasses themselves. That's an adoption blocker on its own, separate from everything else here. I don't want to be forced into contacts just to use the thing.
